The Hero

Wed, Mar 23 at 8pm (Alice Tully); Thu, Mar 24 at 6pm (MoMA)

(Zeze Gamboa, 2004) 97 min. As interwoven stories about loss and, natch, redemption move predictably onwards, Gamboa punches in for moralizing close-ups that his actors can’t really hold. Someone did some excellent location scouting, though; the characters’ widely varied moping grounds say more about class issues than anything else in the movie.

Our Brand Is Crisis

(Rachel Boynton, 2005) 85 min. A Bolivian Presidential candidate hires an American consulting firm, and we get a roundabout look at our own smoke-filled back rooms. It’s hard to say how much of the eventual conflict between Goni, the arrogant, aristocratic candidate, and his xenophobic opposition is the fault of the American strategists; in any case, we’re left with a sobering companion piece to The Battle of Algiers, inspiring equal skepticism in both intervention and self-determination.(Cate Shortland, 2004) 106 min. Thu, Mar 24 at 8:30pm (Alice Tully); Fri, Mar 25 at 6pm (MoMA) (Sophia Zornitsa, 2004) 95 min. La Vie U’un Chien (John Harden, 2004) 13 min.
