Tonight, MoMA is hosting a panel discussion on “Experimental Magazines, Circa 1986,” about experimental magazines, and their role in the art world, circa 1926-34, or possibly some other year, they don’t really say. It’ll feature panelists with ties to art theory, Zone Books (publishers of Bataille, Deleuze, and others), and REAL LIFE Magazine (which published work by Richard Prince and talked about Julian Schnabel in the early 80s). Think of it as ticket back to the gallery scene of the seedy, black-clad, still-dangerous 80s — perfect for those of you who, like me, carry around a serious nostalgia for what New York was like before people like yourself moved in and neutered it.
