“What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?”
— Lin Yutang
I think that nostalgia is an essential part of the American experience in general — certainly in terms of iconography we’re often expressing a desire for an ideal America that looks like our childhood, or someone’s imagined childhood. And then there is the matter of pop culture, or more especially pop music, probably the truest (and most uniquely American, given how much of our national memory has an agreed-upon soundtrack) trigger for our ideal version of ourselves.
All of which is what this next song is about. Also, if we’re honest with ourselves, the American national anthem really would end with all of us screaming “Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!”
