Notice a certain spirit missing from your cocktail menus lately? Yesterday’s Sunday Styles noted the end of vodka, that “flavorless” (and sometimes awful) booze that gave liberated women of the nineties an excuse to get sauced off glorified fruit juice cocktails. Call it another trend of the recession, but the return of classic drinks like Old Fashioneds and Rambles employ whiskeys and gins that add something to the blend, and don’t just spike the other ingredients. It’s the bartender’s version of using every part of the animal.
Another recessionary trend, though, is drinking away the fiscal blues. And is there any better drink for that than a mug full of bottom-shelf vodka?
