Gertrude Stein (lookin’ lovely at right) was many things to many people: a modernist writer; a collector and promoter of modern art; the gravitational center of a thriving expat arts scene in Paris from the 20s through the 40s, and, according to Janet Malcolm’s recent biography Two Lives, a hella-abusive mate towards her partner Alice B. Toklas. I’m not sure how all that will play out in the three (3!) performances tonight based on Stein’s work, but I’m guessing they’ll draw more heavily on her writing than her domestic abusing.
At the Joyce Soho, Wendy Osserman Dance Company begins a four-day run of its latest work more is more is more or less tonight. What’s the Stein connection, you ask? The piece is inspired by her writings, and has the four dancers trading identities in true Steinian style as they respond to the music of Czech singer/violinist/composer Iva Bittová. Meanwhile, in today’s performances in Target Margin’s Theater of Tomorrow lab series (remember, the one The L‘s Alexis Clements interviewed artistic director David Herskovits about?) at the Chocolate Factory, there’s a performance of Stein’s play A Family of Perhaps Three (directed by Herskovits) at 7pm, and a Stein/Thornton Wilder series (the two were good buddies) at 9pm. The latter features a shorter piece inspired by the correspondence between the two writers, a Wilder one-act and the interpretive exercise and performance Telephone/Landscape extrapolated from Stein’s “For the Country Entirely.” Tickets are $10, click here for details.
