Art is Commerce is Art is a Department Store Window Display

9d84/1247176527-bergdorfs.jpgGiven that curatorial and museum studies only really became disciplines in their own right after the first department store window displays showed up in Paris and Berlin and people started thinking more seriously about how objects are arranged for consumption, it seems pretty fitting that the line between window dressing and displaying art should still be blurry. It’s especially blurry this month at the Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan (754 Fifth Ave at 58th St), where the American Visionary Art Museum has set up artworks in the windows and in-store displays (like the Koonsian pink poodle at right, by Andrew Logan).

The exhibition by the Baltimore-based museum, which showcases the work of self-taught artists who haven’t been formally trained, is called Outside Artist and will be on display at Bergdorf Goodman through July 20. And of course, the idea of visiting a fancy department store to see works by outsider artists is the kind of absurd class contrast that you just can’t buy. More pictures here and here.
