In an interview with the Washington Post‘s Ezra Klein, Senator Jay Rockefeller, one of the most knowledgeable (and liberal) Senate Finance Committee members when it comes to healthcare, talks about the filibuster, and specifically about moderate Maine Republican and really classy lady Olympia Snowe, the only Republican in the Senate who is a remotely plausible Yes vote for any kind of healthcare bill that does not begin with the mass euthanization of the Mexicans by the old and bitter. Rockefeller says: “She’s got incredible courage, and the Republican leadership is brutal in the way they apply pressure. Much more so than the Democrats… They bring the hammer down on her, and I’m not going to say how.”
Wonkette jumps right in with “waterboarding”, which is probably correct. But, well. We know that hardline conservatives love trapping uncooperative subjects in a cramped space and dropping in insects—what if they’re locking Olympia Snowe in a trunk full of lobsters like in Where the Truth Lies? Or forcing them to listen to loud rap music—what if they’re locking her in an office and playing John Ashcroft’s recording of “Let the Eagle Soar” on a 24-hour loop? The mind reels, and then sits down, catching its breath, making exaggerated O shapes as it inhales and exhales deeply.
