Green Hero of the Week: Hannaford

The most environmentally friendly supermarket in America opened earlier this summer in Augusta, Maine (the way life should be!), in a converted (with largely recycled materials) high school. Generally pretty solid northeast supermarket chain Hannaford’s new model store has a green roof, geothermal climate control, motion-sensor lights on the fridges, and lots of cheap efficiency fixes like natural light and reflective surfaces.

My recollection of Hannaford supermarkets include a steadily increasing presence for organic foods and local or at least regional meat and produce — which is perhaps easier for a supermarket in Maine than one in New York — and perhaps that could be the subject of their next great pr move. In the meantime, many of these advances could be easily repeated by the Key Food near you.
