The Photographer Who Shot the Blueprint 3 Cover Makes Visual Lists

Dan Tobin Smith

After wondering out loud who had designed the cover for Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 (Mike Conklin thought it might have been Kanye West), I just came across the portfolio of the photographer in question by chance. It was Dan Tobin Smith, who, along with set designer Nicole Yeoman, specializes in filling the frame with innumerable objects arranged so that from one specific angle they resemble some larger form, often a letter (you may have seen his entry in the recent Times Magazine spread of Ts). Much of his work, in fact, is more beautiful than his Blueprint 3 cover, and his portfolio is well worth a browse. (Fubiz)
