Brooklyn Painter of Stormy Seas Wins Michigan Art Prize

Ran Ortner, a San Francisco-born, Alaska-raised, Brooklyn-based painter and installation artist whose central motif is the wave and whose work represented by Causey Contemporary in Williamsburg, has won this year’s edition of ArtPrize. Set in Grand Rapids, Michigan, ArtPrize boasts the world’s biggest prize for contemporary artists: according to ArtsBeat, Ortner just earned himself a cool $250,000 for “Open Water No. 24” (pictured), which received the greatest share of the more than 334,000 votes cast in the two-week competition held at 159 locations throughout Grand Rapids and featuring about 1,200 participating artists.
