Art Forum reports the sad news of the death yesterday of Suzanne Fiol, visual and performance artist and founder of Issue Project Room, after a long battle with cancer at the age of 49. A native New Yorker and graduate of Pratt and the Art Institute of Chicago, Fiol’s own work was especially focused on photography and performance. She worked for several art galleries before founding the Issue Management photo agency in 2001 and the performance, art and music venue Issue Project Room in 2003 in the East Village, and overseeing its move to its current location in Gowanus.

In an interview with Paper Magazine last year, she explained: “Issue exists to commission artists, to give them a proper artist’s fee. We want to see the artists who move our culture forward valued for their contribution.” Fiol’s invaluable contributions to the arts in New York are sure to live on both in her art and projects, particularly as Issue Project Room continues to campaign and raise funds for a move to a beautiful new location in Downtown Brooklyn.
