My ongoing interests in the use of empty real estate to stage exhibitions and Iranian art collide tonight in a new pop-up space above a Bowery kitchen supply store where Canvas New York Art opens a three week-long show of 24 contemporary Iranian artists (click here to RSVP for tonight’s opening reception). Several of the participating artists are fairly well-known and established, like Nargess Hashemi or Reza Derakhshani, while many of the younger artists are having their work shown outside Iran for the first time.
Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing what spectacular and playful yet weirdly ominous sculptural installation Morteza Darehbaghi (work pictured) will contribute to the show. 1001 colors: Contemporary Art from Iran continues through November 22 on the second floor of 193 Bowery, open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 6pm.
