Obamas Send Back Alma Thomas Painting

Alma Thomas Watusi

The Washington Post and Artnews report this morning that one of the 45 artworks the Obamas selected from a variety of Washington, D.C. museums last month, Alma Thomas’ “Watusi (Hard Edge)” (pictured), didn’t fit in Michelle Obama’s office where it was supposed to hang, and has been sent back to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Many conservative commenters, of course, will construe this as a victory after several attacked the painting for plagiarizing, as they put it, the work of Henri Matisse. I really hope the Obamas choose a piece of appropriation art to replace the Thomas painting in the First Lady’s office. Preferably Marcel Duchamp’s “L.H.O.O.Q.”, which would keep conservative pundits busy for weeks.
