Broadway Going Very, Very Dark Next Month

In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play

After relatively strong numbers at the box office this year, Broadway theaters are hunkering down for a very quiet month of January after the annual ticket frenzy of the holidays. Upstaged does a round-up of all the shows closing next month, and though some aren’t surprising, it’s sad to see that some of the best big shows in town haven’t been able to find an audience.

I’m thinking especially of Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts (closing January 3), Sarah Ruhl’s In The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) (pictured, closing January 10) and Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking, which has been more successful than those two others, but will still close on January 17. Other shows closing next month: Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and Shrek on the 3rd, The 39 Steps on the 10th, and Bye Bye Birdie (January 24), with Ragtime on deathwatch, and several others (Finian’s Rainbow, Memphis and Fela!) at risk. Of course, there are some big shows in the works for next year too.
