Every few months, something happens that reminds me how much I liked Grandaddy before they called it quits in the beginning of 2006, and how badly I’m blowing it by never, ever listening to them anymore. This morning, that something is a free Christmas album being given away by their frontman Jason Lytle. If you’re expecting “Frosty the Snowman” or “Mele Kalikimaka,” though, you’ll be disappointed. The album contains seven improvised piano-based instrumental tracks recorded in Lytle’s living room. In a note on his website, he explained his motivation.

“So….in appreciation to those of you who bought my album this year, or came to the shows, or donated money to help my sister, or even to those of you who did none of those things….here is a gift from me.”

Lytle’s sister suffers from a rare, difficult to treat type of brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme , and he’s been doing his best to raise money for her as she fights it. Details can be found here.
