Small, Symbolic Victory for Actors with Disabilities

The Miracle Worker

Back in October, producers from the Circle in the Square Theater drew some unwanted attention from disability advocacy groups when they cast a non-blind actor, Abigail Breslin, as Helen Keller in an upcoming Broadway revival of The Miracle Worker. Well, now all is more or less right in the world: yesterday the Times interviewed little Kyra Siegel, the legally blind 10-year-old who will be Breslin’s understudy for the show.

Problem solved: Producers get good press, audiences get their star, groups representing actors with disabilities get their token disabled actor, and a young actor from Oregon gets the Broadway understudy gig of a lifetime—even though probably nobody will actually see her perform it. (Playgoer)
