Pitchfork unveiled the second half of its “Top 100 Tracks of 2009” feature today. The top spot went to Animal Collective’s “My Girls,” which is not exactly something you can argue with, because duh. But Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ ubiquitous “Empire State of Mind” coming in at a barely respectable number 44? Silly.
Overall, the list is even less tolerant of mainstream pop songs than usual—Lady Gaga secured two spots and Taylor Swift one, but Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna and Beyonce are nowhere to be found. For the most part, I take no real issue with this, as none of those women quite managed to live up to previous successes, but a little love for Paramore’s “Brick By Boring Brick” would have been nice.
One other omission that’s not sitting well around here? “Silver Moons,” but more on that next week.
