Some Actually Moving Haiti Coverage

On NBC Nightly News last night, Brian Williams did an awful job of interviewing a child:

It’s a trend you’re seeing a lot in the Haiti coverage: focus on the kids. I don’t know if it’s meant to appeal to viewers’ instincts and get them to donate more money. But as journalism, it strikes me as cheap.

At least one person’s doing it right, though.

Last night, Jason Beaubien reported on the conditions in Haiti on NPR’s All Things Considered. He began describing an injured little girl waiting for treatment in front of a hospital; I thought, “oh no not more of this!” But then Beaubien begins to cry and can barely manage to finish his reporting. It was a genuinely moving moment of reportage among all of the crass heart-tugging. It’s certainly worth a listen.
