“We Are the World” isn’t the only benefit single in town. Simon Cowell organized a group of pop stars, including Susan Boyle, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Jon Bon Jovi, Leona Lewis, Rod Stewart, Kylie Minogue, Mika, Michael Buble and James Blunt, for a cover of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts.” (It’s kind of terrible, and anyway, I can’t actually figure out where you can buy it, so just donate a couple bucks, will you?)
“karaoke 4 charity”
the choice of song is terrible…the message I always got from this song was “it’s OK to be sad because everybody is sad sometimes; don’t kill yourself”. Extending that message to the people of Haiti is egregiously condescending, or totally blind to what happened there.
well, yeah…. something about the tone of the video (the traffic jam), and about the faces on the people in it (more bored and frustrated than devastated) I think allows that type of reading, but i don’t know if the song itself is necessarily about the type of melodrama you mention. although, i suppose comparing the people of haiti to “everybody” is stupid no matter how you slice it.
