Yesterday the New Museum announced the much-anticipated details for the already infamous exhibition of works from the collection of Dakis Joannou, the Greek super-collector who is also one of the museum’s trustees. Controversy aside, the show, titled “Skin Fruit” and running March 3 to June 6, is shaping up to be a spectacular survey of brand-name and emerging contemporary artists (including David Altmejd, Matthew Barney, Mike Kelley, Terence Koh, Mark Manders, Paul McCarthy, Kiki Smith, Kara Walker, Tino Sehgal and Jenny Holzer), all curated by Jeff Koons, who despite being one of the pillars of the Joannou collection will only be represented by one piece, the collector’s first, “One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank” (1985, pictured).
But why “Skin Fruit”?
Focusing on the body in contemporary art, the exhibition will spotlight the age-old preoccupation with the human form as a vessel of and vehicle for experience.
Ok. That makes sense, what will we see in this show about bodies?
This part, when the press release breaks radically from typical forms of artspeak and goes biblical, is my favorite:
Role-playing games and dramas occur: a man will stage a religious ritual; a sculpture literally sings out; white chocolate monuments tower above visitor’s heads; voracious creatures eat themselves and each other while bodies are buried or frozen; icons and deities are adored or dethroned.
