- Stop the show, I can’t go on!
That Cirque du Soleil hasn’t responded to our request to attend a performance of its upcoming “Banana Shpeel” might not be a sign of disrespect after all: the start of previews for (what’s supposed to be) the vaudevillian hilarity have been pushed back yet again, the Times reports, from St. Patrick’s Day to April 29. They had originally been set to begin February 4, then February 25.
According to the circus company, the show “still needs more time to ripen.” Other banana puns are rampant on the web, which we’ll spare you. “Shpeel,” whose residence at the Beacon Theater prevented the Allman Brothers from jamming there in March as they have for decades, played in Chicago last year, where critics trounced it. Another Cirque du Soleil show (to which we have been invited!), “Ovo,” seems still to be on track for its April 9 opening at Randall’s Island.
