Change has slowly but surely been coming to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and yesterday the Post‘s Brooklyn Blog broke news of the next major transformation coming to the industrial district: a 55,000-square-foot ShopRite supermarket with room for several more shops and over 300 parking spaces (see mockup at right). Prepping the site will involve knocking down nine beautiful historical Admiral’s Row homes and the red brick wall at Flushing Avenue and Navy Street (where scaffolding has been going up recently) and restoring the very decrepit timber shed and military residence right behind it. Construction on the supersized supermarket should begin in early 2012 and be done in 2013.
As much as the idea of more cars and congestion coming to this suburban-sized shopping complex is off-putting, the area badly needs a decent supermarket, and this project will help quite a bit in the Bloomberg administration’s (who brokered the deal since the city owns the Navy Yard land) long-term plan to bring more people to the Vinegar Hill-Farragut Houses-BQE-adjacent Fort Greene area—ie. stimulate development. Or, as district Councilwoman Letitia James told the Post, “this area is like a food desert.” Expect the gentrification of the long dormant Navy Yard district to pick up a little steam now—wine bars and cupcakes can’t be far off.
