I will admit to having as stifling a weakness for boring, NPR-approved indie-rock as almost anyone, but holy fuck, I am like a straight-up ethnomusicologist compared to Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner of the long-running indie-pop duo Mates of State. This summer, the band will release Crushes (The Covers Mixtape), a collection of covers of songs by artists like Belle and Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, Dear Nora and Daniel Johnston. The album-opening cover of “Laura” by Girls is available as a free download at the band’s website, but real talk: it’s fucking terrible. Fast-forward to 1:28 for the “you’ve been a bitch” line, and then cringe, uncontrollably, as Gardner interjects, “Oh, no I haven’t been!” The full track-list is after the jump. It includes “Second Hand News” by Fleetwood Mac, and I swear to god, if they fuck that up even half as badly as they fucked I’m “Laura,” I am going to be so sad.

Laura (Girls)
Son et Lumiere (The Mars Volta)
Sleep the Clock Around (Belle and Sebastian)
Technicolor Girls (Death Cab for Cutie)
Long Way Home (Tom Waits)
Love Letter (Nick Cave)
Second Hand News (Fleetwood Mac)
17 Pink Sugar Elephants (Vashti Bunyan)
Roller Coaster Ride (Dear Nora)
True Love Will Find You in the End (Daniel Johnston)
