New York City Drinking Water is Saved!

Good news is nice, no? New York State environmental officials have decided that new, looser regulatory guidelines for natural gas drilling will not apply to the Catskills watershed that supplies NYC with some of the best drinking water in the world. Hooray!

To celebrate, I’m going to get drunk this afternoon. On water.

  • Being clear on the NY State decision: THIS IS NOT A BAN.

It changes one small aspect of the permitting process. It states that wells in the watersheds are to be permitted one by one whereas in the rest of the state the permitting process happens by rule, under the regs proposed by DEC’s statewide Environmental Impact Study.

It also does not affect the rest of NY State nor the combined Delaware River watersheds.
