The New York State Department of Correctional Services has announced that Thomas Hagen, aka Talmadge Hayer, aka Mujahid Halim, was set free on parole today, 45 years after shooting Malcolm X dead in Harlem.

The other two men convicted in the assassination have long since been released; both persist, still, in their claims of innocence—claims backed up by Hayer, who admitted to his role at trial, and later named fellow-members of the Nation of Islam whom, he said, participated in the plot with him. J. Edgar Hoover, who probably ordered the whole thing via his man undercover in the Nation of Islam, died in 1972.
