Supreme Court confirmation hearings are always awful, because no senator will admit to voting against a candidate for ideological reasons, and no judicial nominee will admit to having an ideology. So when the nominee is a lawyer without a judicial record, and a general history of calculated conciliation and competence, the dreadful sloggish shadowplay will become even more of a dreadful sloggish shadowplay than usual. So wake me up when the confirmation hearings for Solicitor General Elena Kagan are over.

Alternately, wake me up when and if somebody from either side makes enough noise about Kagan probably being a lesbian for us to have an honest conversation about the role of gays in society and of personal history in the judiciary.
