North Brooklyn flags

Beautiful and benevolent magazine GOOD reached out to graphic designers all over the world to design flags for ‘hoods they hold dear as part of their recent neighborhoods issue, and the project‘s three NYC flags are… interesting. That’s Williamsburg and Greenpoint above (both by Playlab, of North 14th Street), I’ll let you figure out which is which. Better still is design firm Popglory‘s incomprehensible take on the West Village, which is so shocking you’ll have to click through the jump before seeing it.

West Village flag

An owl? Is there some neighborhood legend to do with nocturnal birds of prey that I don’t know about, or is it just a reference to all the ironic owl statues that adorn so many window ledges in, like, every neighborhood in the city? And what’s with the VW rapper chain? Aside from the obvious VW-WV-West Village acronym, as far as I know there isn’t a VW factory or dealership in the area. This is all wrong. Which makes it right?
