Theater for One

Daring and innovative performance art in Times Square is more likely to set off a bomb scare than draw a crowd these days, and shows on an intimate scale are mostly part of its peep show past, but for 10 days starting tomorrow Tony-nominated set designer (for Spring Awakening and now American Idiot) Christine Jones will be re-activating that legacy by opening her Theater for One (pictured) project space in Duffy Square.

Basically a big black box (pictured), the space has room for one audience-member and one performer, and beginning tomorrow each day will be devoted to a different type of performance, from dance and magic to new plays and more. Each performance will last ten minutes, with seating on a first-come, first-serve basis from 1-9pm. First done at Princeton in 2007, performers already confirmed for this Theater for One production include actors Frank Wood, Dallas Roberts, magician Stephen Cuiffo, musician Phyllis Chen and playwright Courtney Baron.
