Are NPR Listeners Suddenly Less White and Boring?

NPR has just published the results of a poll in which they asked their listeners to name the Best Music of 2010 (So Far), and they’re at least a little bit surprising. The top spot went to Plastic Beach the most recent album from by Damon Albarn’s genre-defying Gorillaz, with the other spots in the top five going to The Black Keys’s bluesy, hip-shaking Brothers, LCD Soundsystem’s dance/rock masterpiece This Is Happening, and the self-titled debut from Broken Bells, the collaboration between Danger Mouse and The Shins’ James Mercer. Oh, and The National, of course, but whatever. If you were to count all the non-white people involved in those projects (including the guests on the Gorillaz album), the total would be… well, I don’t know exactly, but it’s definitely more than zero. I don’t know what’s more shocking: the relative diversity of this list, or the fact that there are people out there who listened to that Broken Bells record more than once.
