Subway Compass stencil

Sure, there’s probably an app for that, but disoriented subway riders exiting stations can stop looking up for landmarks (or into their smartphones) to regain their bearings: look down and you just might spot the work of an anonymous stencil artist (with a Facebook page) who’s been tagging the tops of subway staircases all over Downtown Manhattan with compasses (pictured). NYC The Blog has a tally of recent sightings, which seems to suggest that there are many more subway compasses being stenciled on the street right now. It’s the most practical sidewalk-augmenting idea since separate locals and tourists walking lanes!
