Why Does Sweden Hate Canada? (And Other Questions Raised By a Recent Survey)

canada vs. sweden

Hmm. As one of The L Mag‘s resident Canadians, I get sent a lot of Canada-related “blogable” items sent to me, like this recent survey that tells us what the rest of the world thinks of Canada. One question missing from this survey was “Do you actually care about Canada?,” to which I’m sure 95 percent of respondents would have answered “no.” So I’ll be brief.

While 79 percent of Russians think Canada is a “world economic power,” only 33 percent of Swedes believe this. And while 67 percent of the world thinks Canada is a leader working for peace and human rights, only 37 percent of Swedes believe this. You seeing a pattern here? Fucking Swedes.

Well you know what, Sweden, for some absolutely bewildering reason, a whopping 92 percent of the French think Canadians are “cool” (really?); and, get this, 70 percent of Saudi Arabians think we’re “sexy.” So, Sweden, you can take your Volvo and your Ikea and shove it.

  • Hey Jonny, don’t believe everything you read! That includes what you read about what the French and the Saudi Arabians are thinking about you! ;) I can guarantee you that the Swedes are loving your country and your people hands down! We love the nature, we love the people and we love your politic point of view. But I must say though, I am a bit surprised that you wrote this article based on that survey….

  • I love Sweedish people! I had no idea they didn’t hold us with higher regard though :( It’s slightly disheartening.

But rudely telling them ‘shove it’ is harsh and uncalled for and is not helping the Canadian image of being very polite, friendly, peaceful ect… You should know the Sweeds have a point about us not being world leaders in human rights. Our current government has dropped the ball on some issues in our own country. Need I remind you of the conditions of our secluded reserves? The whole right-to-protest issue for students was also handled poorly by our government. We got flack from the international community for that. That’s right, they noticed -it was that bad. Also, we are also not nearly as involved with UN missions as we were back in the 90’s. As soon as the conservatives swooped into power, the hand dolling out money and aid to help the other citizens of this planet was effectively cut off. WE SUCK BIG TIME RIGHT NOW on the international stage. Much of our country is unaware of this fact. We are not pulling our weight that we were years ago.

Also tax money that pays for our social programs have been decreased and redistributed. THIS MEANS cuts to our education system, health care and other important social programs that us Canadians hold so dear (yeah, that includes free healthcare). Need a clearer picture? More hospital/hospital departments closing, less money for our health care system (we pay out of pocket for more treatments now), less financial aid for young families and elderly, no more gun registry programs (scary as f*ck), less work in all of these fields, not to mention the countless other social programs being cut… You can thank the conservatives for that. Most of the money that they’re reaping in by these cuts is going towards decreasing our national debt and building more prisons (all the while bi-passing our cultural values which is an utter disgrace). So really, the Sweeds have a point. We are becoming a less socialist country and have done fuck-all for ourselves and other people. It’s all about the money to our current government.

Canada is becoming a more capitalist country -a less than pleasant place where your neighbour now has to pay more money for cancer treatment drugs because our government sucks (funding for our health care system has been cut). It’s like we stopped caring for our fellow citizens, gone bat-shit crazy, and decided every man for them-self type deal by selecting a government trending toward this capitalist system. SO before you go bashing the Sweeds, stop and really think about what is going on in our country and where our government has lead us. Don’t hate on the Sweeds just because they have the balls to point this out.

The point of all this? Don’t get mad at them and write something so crude about a wonderful nation full of caring people. Honestly, Sweeden has an excellent governing body that actually takes care of it’s citizens. Who gives a crap that their taxes are a bit higher there? The money goes to better education and health care among many other things we are losing touch with. We could learn from these people by actually selecting a governing party that represent out true values.
