Just four months after the sudden death of legendary songwriter Alex Chilton, Big Star lost another original member yesterday, when bassist Andy Hummel died of cancer in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 59. Along with Chilton, Chris Bell and Jody Stephens, he helped form the band in 1971 and played on their massively influential early full-lengths, #1 Record and Radio City. He left the band in 1974 and didn’t take part in their second phase, when they reformed with Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, though he did play a star-studded show at this year’s SXSW to honor Chilton, who’d died just days earlier. A tough year for a great band.
