With the death of Big Star frontman Alex Chilton this March, City Winery has organized a night to focus on the music he left behind — a huge, inspiring body of work built on power-pop hooks and sneakily dark lyrics. On July 28, they’ll enlist Yo La Tengo, Marshall Crenshaw, Jon Spencer, the Lemonhead’s Evan Dando, members of Big Star and Chilton’s original band, The Box Tops, plus a ton more for Channeling Chilton: A Night of Alex Chilton’s Music, with part of the proceeds going to the Gulf Restoration Network and their efforts to help those affected by the the BP drilling disaster. This, of course, comes on the heels of more sad news, the loss of founding bassist Andy Hummel to cancer earlier this week. Tickets are $28 and available here.
