Gorillaz Are Coming to Madison Square Garden This Fall

Honest? I’ve never really understood people’s fascination with Gorillaz. Damon Albarn was in Blur, for cryin’ out loud. Everyone except the Gallagher brothers likes him. He gave us the most amped-up song of 1997, then had a hand in the best music video chronicling a milk carton’s detective work. Plus, you know, achieved mass popularity for Brit pop in the early 90s. There’s no reason to hide behind a cartoon, buddy.

Despite mixed reviews of their headlining set at this year’s Coachella Festival, I definitely seem to be in the minority here. Their third album, Plastic Beach, is doing quite well for itself, having entered the U.S. Billboard charts at #2 upon its release and recently being voted #1 in an “album of 2010 thus far” poll by NPR listeners. Now the supergroup, also featuring the likes of Jamie Hewlett, The Clash’s Paul Simonon and Mick Jones, and British hip-hop stars Kano and Bashy, are set to play little ol’ Madison Square Garden on October 8 as part of their “Escape to Plastic Beach” world tour takeover, joining the elite ranks of Justin Bieber‘s haido. In their defense, as seen in the trailer down below, one should be able to expect lots of fancy set designs, special guests and hats. There seems to be a lot of hats, right? Sailor hats, top hats, knit caps, marching band hats, etc. Seriously, look at all the hats!

And just for kicks…
