According to Spoon’s Twitter feed, their tourmates/labelmates in Arcade Fire scored the number one spot on the Billboard charts. Britt Daniel never struck us as the lying type, so we’re going to go ahead and take his word that The Suburbs sold 156,000 copies last week, which was enough to edge out Eminem’s Recovery for top honors in both the U.S. and U.K. and, for the sake of putting two hugely popular indie-rock bands head to head, would have been enough to take Vampire Weekend’s Contra when it debuted atop the charts in January. It seems safe to assume that selling out little ol’ Madison Square Garden and that $3.99 download price offered on Amazon.com last week helped, as did the fact that we at The L took it upon ourselves to blog about them every 10-15 minutes. This is the first chart-topping album for Merge Records, which feels good.
