Melbourne Theater Companys Richard III

The Australian reports that Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire starring Cate Blanchett as Blanche Dubois, which we loved so much when it came to BAM in December that we just proclaimed it one of the season’s best moments in Brooklyn performance, received one measly nomination for this year’s Helpmann Awards, Australia’s Tony equivalent, and not even a good one: Best Sound Design. Really? Almost as depressing is the news that the show with the most nominations is… Jersey Boys! WTF, Australia?

Meanwhile the nominees for Best Play are August: Osage County (Melbourne Theatre Company), Richard III (pictured, MTC), Happy Days ( Malthouse Theatre ) and The Book of Everything ( Company B Belvoir & Kim Carpenters Theatre of Image ). The Helpmanns will be handed out on September 6, although now we have even less reason to care. (CultureMonster)
