According to police, a 21-year-old from upstate New York, named Enright Micheal, hailed a cab at 24th Street and 2nd Avenue and proceeded to ask the driver, “Are you Muslim?” When the 43-year-old answered affirmatively, the passenger took out a knife, “slashing him,” NY1 reports, “in the throat, arm, and lip.” The driver locked the doors, called 911, and everyone went to Bellevue.

Who’s to blame for this hate crime? Sarah Palin et al., of course! All of those opposing the cultural center in Tribeca that have whipped the country in a xenophobic fever.

To quote commenter gjk, “so are we now going to ban Muslims from the [ground zero] site? Arrest them if they dare to pray at the memorial? Put a crescent moon patch on them? That’s the logical conclusion of all this rhetoric.” That, or stabbing cab drivers in the neck.

I hope that instead of putting the assailant in jail, they build a mosque on his face.

  • So are the people who whip up fury about racism responsible for the black guy in Connecticut who shot his white co-workers?

Were the people who whipped up fury against the Vietnam war responsible for terrorist bombings committed by the Weather Underground?

Or is this America, where freedom of speech means that we don’t blame one person’s words for another person’s actions?

  • I’m not familiar with the Connecticut case, but if the shooter was inspired by demagogues who preached very publicly that all white people were the same and out to “get him,” I would hold them morally accountable for his actions, yeah. When you preach hate and inspire violence you assume responsibility for that violence, regardless of whether or not the law protects your right to say it.
