Louise Bourgeois Eye Benches in New Orleans

Last month, just six weeks after the superstar French-American artist Louise Bourgeois died at age 98 of a heart attack, a public sculpture that she had loaned to the city of New Orleans and paid to ship and install in Lafayette Square was vandalized, with parts broken off likely to be sold for scrap metal. The Times-Picayune reports that the theft of the grates over the sculptures’ eyes (as seen above) were pried from atop the corneas, probably to be sold at a scrap yard. The piece, “Eye Benches IV,” pre-eye-gauging, was valued at $2.7 million. (ArtInfo)
