Russian Rapper Sentenced to Ten Days in Prison for Talking Shit About Cops

Yo, so it turns out America is super awesome. Sure, we’ve griped about our rappers being treated poorly, from Jay-Z’s rooftop show being cancelled mysteriously just a couple day’s after Drake’s aborted Seaport show, to Ice-T being arrested for not wearing his seatbelt while driving with a suspended license and no car insurance (ok, we don’t really gripe about that one).

But these are small injustices compared to what happened to Russian rapper Noize MC, who was arrested and sentenced to ten days in jail after performing a song called “Kuri Bambuk,” about police brutality. One passage, translated into English, goes: “Citizen! Halt. Halt. Turn out your pockets, slap, slap. Now your kidneys, kick, kick. Well off you go. Forget it, swallow it, be silent,” which presumably sounds a lot cooler in Russian.

Anyway, at one point during the show, which took place in the city of Volgograd, Noize MC’s drummer approached the audience and asked that they throw money into a hat. When police who were on hand reportedly asked that he stop begging, the rapper broke into the offending song. I like to think the cops were just like, “Uh, dude? It’s sort of not cool for you be passing around a hat at your own show. It makes you look kind of desperate, you know?,” but that’s probably not what happened. [BBC]
