This morning Times bike blog Spokes touches on an unfortunately true story from the Colorado gubernatorial campaign, where current Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is the Democratic favorite, and coming under fire from Republican candidate Dan Maes for participating in the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), a global association of cities “commitment to sustainable development”—New York is another of the 1,200 members. Maes explained what ICLEI is really about to the Denver Post: “At first, I thought, ‘Gosh, public transportation, what’s wrong with that, and what’s wrong with people parking their cars and riding their bikes? And what’s wrong with incentives for green cars?’” Do you really want to know?
Maes continues: “But if you do your homework and research, you realize ICLEI is part of a greater strategy to rein in American cities under a United Nations treaty.”
If you do your homework and research you also realize that ICLEI isn’t affiliated with the UN in any way and that Coloradans, even the Republican ones, are among the least obese in America. Hickenlooper for Governor!
