Pee-Wee Drops by Kenny Scharf’s Bowery Mural

Yesterday one aging emblem of never-ending childlike wonder visited another when Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman, in leather) dropped by the corner of Bowery and Houston, where Kenny Scharf (in hoodie) was hard at work and nearing completion of his new mural. Curbed was on the scene to watch two worlds of nostalgia collide.

Mondays, of course, are Reubens’ only days off from his delirious, smiling-muscle-pain-inducing Broadway show. Scharf was working his way across the remaining white space along the bottom of the wall, and an assistant at the scene when I dropped by yesterday said that he has to have it finished before the rain later today. The pair previously collaborated (along with Dennis Hopper and Vincent Gallo!) on this delirious computer-animated short Groovenians, which Scharf created, drew and designed, and for which Reubens did some pretty distinctive voice acting:
