Friday’s three-alarm fire at 17th Street and 5th Avenue in South Slope was caused by an exploding boiler and, according to the Post, required 4 hours and 150 firefighters to contain. When all was said and done it had claimed the “Associated Supermarket, in the ground floor and gutt[ed] 10 residential apartments above.” Which is bad enough as it is, but shortly thereafter Open Source Gallery, which is right behind Associated on 17th Street, tweeted cryptically: “Open Source must live.” Then on Saturday, an email explained everything.

The photos above and below were included in an email sent out by Open Source on Saturday morning, announcing that the following day’s event was being moved about a block away, and that “due to huge fire today’s concert is canceled.” The photos attached show pretty severe damage to the tiny white cube gallery, though there’s no information as to how and when it will live again. We sincerely hope it will, though, because every time we’ve visited we really enjoyed what we saw.
