Looking to stuff your pie-hole this weekend? Luckily there are some great food events and restaurant openings to help you fatten up for the winter.
Friday: Yes, it finally happened. Sara Jenkins, the woman behind the porktastic Porchetta in the East Village, has finally opened her new pasta place Porsena (21 E 7th Street, East Village). Sadly, it is sans alcohol license right now, so you’re going to have to go without booze for an hour or so. Still, if her insanely tasty pork-filled sandwiches at Porchetta are any indication, it’ll be worth it. Ear-shaped pizza filled with spicy lamb sausage and mustard greens and spaghetti with Manila clams are just a few of the pastas you can expect, plus entrees like a Niman Ranch pork chop and red wine-braised short ribs with polenta. Saturday: The one and only Jimmy Carbone is hosting the Battle of the Belgians at his bar Jimmy’s No. 43 in the East Village. What do you get for your $60 ticket? A 5-hour tasting of small-batch, Belgian-style beers including 30 different bottled Belgian beers and 12 American craft beers on tap paired with cheese, meat and chocolate from purveyors like Jasper Hill Farm, Mast Brothers Chocolate, Salumeria Bielles and more. The event starts at noon, so I hope you have your drinkin’ face on.
Sunday: It’s time to get into the holiday spirit, whether you like it or not. Theo Peck and Nick Suarez, champs of too many cook-offs to mention, are holding the Brooklyn Holiday Experiment at the Bell House, where home chefs will prepare their favorite holiday dishes in a battle royale for cooking supremacy. This year, the judges are pretty serious: Andrew Knowlton (Bon Appetit), Garrett Oliver (brewmaster for Brooklyn Brewery) and Peter Hoffman (owner/chef at Savoy and Back Forty). Tickets are $20 if you buy them beforehand.
