If you mostly follow film geeks and movie critics on Twitter, you were no doubt deluged yesterday afternoon with tweets hashtagged #lessambitiouscriterion. These were part of a Twitter-based contest that the high-end DVD company suddenly announced, encouraging its followers to comb through the company’s 559 releases to date and come up with hilarious movie title revisions. Criterion’s example: “Dillinger is Fine,” an unfunny but illustrative spin on Marco Ferreri’s Dillinger is Dead, Spine No. 506.

The winners were announced this morning; none were as funny as our editors’ best. (Little did we know “Dillinger is Fine” would be the exemplar for the style of humor appreciated by Criterion’s Twitter judges!)

The winners: YI; BOUDOU LEFT TO DROWN; PIZZA, ITALIAN STYLE; UM, BERT OD’ED; and THE RED CROCS.

Superior entries from L Magazine editors (who clearly had nothing much to do yesterday afternoon):

Mark Asch, film editor:
+ EXPECTATIONS
+ THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIS

Henry Stewart, factotum:
+ HOLLYWOOD REPORTER LIGHTS
+ PALER ’88
+ MADE IN MAURITIUS

Benjamin Sutton, arts editor:
+ LIGHT SNACK AT HANGING ROCK
+ SHIRTLESS LUNCH
+ THE PLAINLY VISIBLE FORTRESS
+ YOUNG MR. BUSH
+ ROBINSON CRUSOE ON EARTH
+ KILL?

The contest may be over, but feel free to keep playing in the comments.

  • Although, come to think of it, just “Dog Bites Man,” might be purer.
