The Hot Chocolate Festival Continues Today with Creamy Stout

Another week, another batch of ridiculous hot chocolate flavors at The City Bakery. Given that Monday began with Earl Grey Tea Hot Chocolate, it seems somewhat fitting that the workweek wraps up with Creamy Stout Hot Chocolate. After all, what’s better than beer and hot chocolate combined? Not much, I say.

Unlike last week’s Banana Peel Hot Chocolate, the creamy stout doesn’t slap you in the face with its distinct flavor. You first taste the chocolate, and it’s after you swallow your first spoonful that the more bittersweet stout aftertaste hits your tastebuds. It’s admittedly more of an afterthought than anything else, but the balance just seems right. Like a good brewski, you don’t want one of the many competing flavors to totally mask any of the others, and the same can be said for this here drink. The chocolate, while certainly present, doesn’t totally cover up the stout. They mesh together perfectly; a holy union if there ever was one.

The only complaint that I have with this flavor, as with the last one, was that it’s just too damn rich. I don’t know how much more of this my poor heart can take. If you want to take the edge off, I recommend supplementing your drink with one of the famous pretzel croissants, baked fresh in seemingly continuous waves. Perfectly flaky and salty, after having my first one today, I have seen the light. No other croissant will top it, except maybe for CeciCela in SoHo, but that’s a topic for another post entirely.
