Here at L Mag HQ, the air feels a little fresher, the coffee tastes a little bolder, and the unsolicited galleys of sex books stacked next to my workspace looks a little taller—everything’s coming up Upstart. Literary Upstart, our seventh annual Search for Pocket Fiction competition and reading series (brought to you by the New School), kicks off with our first semifinal reading next Wednesday, March 30, at Spike Hill on Bedford Ave. There, beginning at 7pm, some of the city’s best unknown writers will read previously unpublished short fiction for our distinguished judging panel, headed by Ben Greenman and comprised of rapier-like wits from Electric Literature, HarperCollins, and, well, The L Magazine.
Plus: Dangerously low-priced drink specials (soon to be announced)! The return of our thrillingly erudite New York City Literary Trivia competition (unless none of the contestants know any of the answers)! L Magazine editor-in-chief Jonny Diamond’s triumphant first public appearance since the holiday party (assuming he shows up)!
