The visual conjurer behind Wong Kar Wai’s memory magic, not to mention Jarmusch’s The Limits of Control and Van Sant’s Paranoid Park, has taken the natural next step—shooting a musical entry in Japan’s notorious soft-core pinku eiga genre! The result, Underwater Love (directed by Shinji Imaoka, screening at Tribeca this Wednesday, April 27, at 10:30 p.m., and Thursday, April 28, at 11:30 p.m), features dancing fish-factory workers and sex with well-endowed kappas (enchanted turtle people from swamps, of course).
The unstoppable Doyle explained it all in a recent email volley (CAPS or not preserved as originally written).
How did it happen that you’re shooting a pink musical?
SAME WAY EVERY OTHER FILM/LOVE STORY HAS HAPPENED : A FRIEND ASKED ME TO SPEND SOME TIME TOGETHER ….AND WE DID . THE PROMISE OF FIVE DAYS OF SEX EVERY SEVEN MINUTES AND MUSIC IN BETWEEN MADE IT FEEL EVEN MORE MY BALL-PARK.
I’m a big fan of the journal you made for Happy Together. What would a page from the journal on Underwater Love look like?
there is one in the works …in the meantime think of buddhist metaphors like the lotus rising out of the swamp ( as i am )
Gear time: tell us a bit about the camera equipment and techniques you used for Underwater Love.
to me PINKYU films are where DOGME left off : you have to shoot on 35MM FILM , YOU DONT HAVE SYNCH SOUND , IT HAS TO BE SHOT IN A WEEK AND EDITED IN THE COMING WEEK … ONE TAKE ONE SCENE ETC ETC … THE DISCIPLINE OF THE GENRE WAS LIKE A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM : CONTINUITY OF PLACE AND SPACE / TIME ESSENTIAL TO THE INTEGRITY / ENERGY OF THE PIECE
What’s the secret to lighting kappas?
WHAT WATER DOES FOR KAPPAS BEER DOES FOR THE CREW
