The award-winning war photographer Tim Hetherington was killed today in Libya, where he was covering the ongoing revolution, during a mortar attack apparently launched by pro-Gaddafi forces, confirms Vanity Fair, for whom he shot the war in Afghanistan. With the writer Sebastian Junger, he spent a year with a unit there to direct the Oscar-nominated war documentary Restrepo, for which he his perhaps best-known outside of the journalistic community; it’s perhaps the most intense of the recent spate of embedded war docs. Yesterday, he Tweeted: “In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.”

According to FreeWilliamsburg, the British-born Hetherington was based for a time out of Kent Avenue.
