Remember how much trouble Allegra LaViola got into a couple months ago when her same-named gallery on East Broadway had some nudes near the window in her exhibition Pornucopia? Well now nearby Orchard Windows Gallery is in similarly hot, steamy, sexy water for a show of far more explicit paintings by Nick Weber (NSFW link) that students from neighboring PS 42 can see from the sidewalk.

The exhibition, appropriately titled Porno Paintings, features ten rather beautifully executed oil paintings that portray still images from porn videos, including all manner of graphic, group, and oral sex.

Weber, who’s based in the Hamptons, gives the Post the predictable response: “They’re afraid it’s going to corrupt the kids, when kids can watch people getting shot on TV.”

True, but they can’t see shots of another sort on TV—that’s what the internet and the local library are for. Complaints made to the NYPD by the school and a nearby church have led to three visits by the police since the show opened on May 9, but for now the offending paintings remain visible from the sidewalk.

One random young woman on the street gave the Post this unfortunate quotation:

“That’s not art; that’s just porn,” Joanna Morillo, 28, said. “When little kids see that, they will ask questions. That shouldn’t be out here.”

Hm, yes, kids asking questions is categorically undesirable.

Gallery-owner Dino Eli gets the last word: “Porn is the norm.”

Porno Paintings remains on view at Orchard Windows Gallery (35 Orchard Street) through May 27.
