A Look at Morgane, The New French Bistro on Bedford Ave

Last night, the people behind the Lower East Side’s chichi drinking den Chloe 81 set up shop in Williamsburg with their French bistro Morgane on Bedford Avenue. The place is deceptively big, mostly because of the restaurant’s gigantic backyard. All in all, the place sits 130, serving a menu of tried-and-true bistro classics like steak frites ($21), roasted duck breast ($19) and, of course, a big, beefy burger ($14). So yeah, not exactly revolutionary stuff, but solid fare for when you (and possibly a date) are looking for something simple.

Right now the restaurant only has a beer-and-wine license, so no cocktails, a shame since I was craving a Negroni after trekking through the scorching heat to get there. Thankfully they had a nice rosé to cool me down, a much better choice than the handful of beers they had on tap like Stella and Kronenberg. The dining room takes a page from the Keith McNally school of restaurant design, all white subway tile, red leather banquettes and antique mirrors. Again, not groundbreaking, but attractive nonetheless (ditto the staff). Morgane also serves Balthazar pastries and coffee for breakfast and features a brunch menu full of classics like croque monsieurs and omelettes.
